freedom
Freedom is something that is embodied by a wild animal. And Mishu, despite being a domesticated dog, is wild. When she is let off leash and runs and jumps through the forest like a deer, the feeling of joy in her freedom is palpable. Freedom also comes from security – from knowing that you have somewhere safe to come back to and that you have enough to eat and shelter. For that reason, Mishu today is more free than Mishu the puppy wandering the streets of Guatemala herself. The same applies to humans — to be free means not just not being enslaved, it means having the basic security of food, shelter, warmth and support that allow us to go forth to the world and explore new adventures. That sense of exploration is what makes us feel alive and something that those of us who have the gift of a life that allows it, have something to be thankful for every day.
