Do you know that you’re a celebrity?

Did someone say celery? Mmmm…. sounds delicious

The Inside Story

Celebrity?  Mishu could not be less interested! In fact, she’s so not interested in being a celebrity that she doesn’t even know that word. For her, it might as well be celery.

Dear Sammi:  The wisest people think they don’t know anything….so they’re always curious, open to new things, learning, and growing….  Not to brag, but every morning I sniff the grass as if I’ve never smelled grass before. #TrySomethingNew

People don’t like it when you push them down on your way to be first. ~ Mishu

People don’t like it when you push them down on your way to be first. ~ Mishu

Yea, so people don’t like it when I knock them over on my because of my drive to be first…  That goes for you humans too: it’s okay to compete and try to be first, but don’t knock anyone down on your way.  #BeKind

The Inside Story

Dear Mishu is definitely an alpha — and you see that most on walks or hikes. If she’s not first, leading the way, #1 explorer, she’ll pull on the leash until whoever is holding it moves to the front.
I don’t know whether it’s her instinct to protect everyone or just her excitement to explore, but it is a habit that we haven’t really tried to break her of.  Mostly because Mishu’s bold, free spirited love of life is what we admire about her so much. We want to be like Mishu because she is so excited to be first!
Finishing First – the Kind Way
Still…

We definitely do not encourage that behavior in Mishu!
The obvious parallel to humans is that so many of us do knock people over, or walk all over them, in our drive to finish first, win the promotion, etc. Clearly that is a good strategy for some in the short term, but in the long term — Mishu’s right — people do not like that. This is NOT what Mishu means by Now is Now!
There might be short term gain to be had from finishing first while ignoring human decency, kindness, and basic manners, but eventually people will figure out that this is your M.O. and they will not want to work with you anymore. Call it Karma, call it fate, call it getting your due:  treating people like they’re expendable just because you are focused on yourself and your goals is never going to be a good strategy! read more

Juan asks about Freedom; Mishu answers

Dear Juan,
I wish I could run as fast as I can for as long as I want, but I wouldn’t want to give up treats, a comfy place to sleep, and my humans….  Did you know that some humans they aren’t free – and they also don’t get good food, a comfy place to sleep or to be with the people they love?  Human trafficking is a terrible problem. You can help by visiting my friends @FreedomUnitedHQ

The Inside Story

As many of you know, Dear Mishu had a tough puppyhood in a place where animals are often neglected. There are so many animals in this situation in the world, that it can be easy to overlook the horrible crimes we humans enact on our own species. read more

What’s your favorite food? Aimee asks, Mishu answers.

Dear Aimee,
I’ll eat anything.  It must be my proud street-dog heritage –  I’ve got some scavenger in me! …  A lot of us with difficult pasts focus on the negatives, but we should remember that it gave us many things: resilience, flexibility, an appreciation for life and a willingness to eat anything!

The Inside Story

Yes, Mishu really will eat anything, including things she’s not supposed to eat.

She’s not like some dogs who you have to measure their food or they’ll eat everything in the bowl.  Even if it’s her favorite food, Mishu will generally stop when she’s no longer hungry and leave some food in the bowl. read more

Dear Mishu’s Stress Relief Advice

How can I stop wasting time? Tyler asks, Mishu answers.

How can I stop wasting time? Tyler asks, Mishu answers.

Dear Tyler,

Why are you wasting time? Figure that out and you’ll know what to do.  #NowIsNow

The Inside Story

Procrastinating, or wasting time, is pretty common. The thing most of us forget is that just fighting the tendency won’t help. What will help is figuring out why we are wasting time. Because when we find ourselves wasting time, there’s usually a good reason. And knowing that reason is the source of making a change.

Maybe we just really don’t want to be doing the activity that we’re supposed to be doing. That’s possible, and although it’s not always possible to avoid unpleasant or boring tasks, sometimes knowing that you really don’t like something can help you eventually make a change in your life. read more

Now is Now – Really, it is

Dear Blake,

When I say Now is Now, I’m trying to remind you to focus on the moment you are in, instead of your worries about tomorrow or yesterday. #NowIsNow #DearMishu #Mindfulness

The Inside Story

Now is Now. Mishu posts about it a lot.  Like here and here and here
Why? Because so many of us forget to breathe, forget to pay attention to what  is happening now in this very moment.

Even if you’re under a lot of stress, and have a lot of worries. If you stop for a minute and just exist in the moment you are in, you can find relief from that stress. Look at the sunset. Breathe and appreciate that you can. Look at your dog, your child, your friend. Pay attention to how lucky you are to have food to eat, or clean water. read more

Dear Mishu Tries Something New

Dear Mishu:  When’s the last time you tried something new?  From: Julianne…

Great question, Julianne – Watch this video to see Mishu’s answer!

Mishu is always telling humans to Try Something New and live like Everyday Is a Gift. Check out this video of the last time Mishu tried to follow her own advice! #TrySomethingNew #DearMishu

The Inside Story

It was back in January, when Guatemala bred and California raised Mishu, experienced snow for the very first time. She walked down the steps, took a few steps, and immediately tried to go back up. The video doesn’t show everything, but there was about 5 minutes of Mishu repeatedly being lured or carried out to the snow, and then escaping back under cover or up the stairs. read more

Dear Eva,
Oh, I’ve been there! Do you know that I’ve never, ever caught a squirrel?! (I have caught a few rats, but that’s not really my #passion)…. I think that the key is to start fresh every day: don’t think about all the other times you tried and failed. Just think about today, #now, and how amazing you are that you’re pursuing your dream. It’s #beautiful, what you’re doing…. Does that help?…  Love, Mishu #DearMishu #dogsofinstagram

The Inside Story
Mishu’s response to “What is Love?”

Mishu’s response to Alex’s question was as simple as can possibly be: Love is making each other happy.

How did Mishu teach us this?  Mishu definitely makes her family members feel loved, and we can learn a lot about love from observing her behavior.

Some of the things she does to show love are: she greets her family members and friends at the door with enthusiasm and she waits to go to bed until everyone is at home and in bed. Another thing she does, which is amazing, is that whenever a family member is sick or depressed, Mishu comes and sits nearby them. read more
