Adopt Don’t Shop – Dear Mishu’s Adoption Story #AdoptAShelterPetDay

Is that E.T?  No, it’s me, Dear Mishu, skinny & dirty, when I was rescued in Guatemala by Animal Aware (, and before I got adopted. I’m sharing this very personal photo in honor of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. #AdoptDontShop #AdoptAShelterPetDay

📢Dear Mishu will take questions LIVE: Sign up to join her Live Chat. 📢

The Inside Story

Dear Mishu’s adoption story is fairly well known by now. She was found at the gate of Animal Aware Guatemala when she was a puppy – scared, skinny, dirty and hungry. They took her in and cared for her, got her vaccinated and spayed, and a sister rescue group brought her to San Francisco, where we got to adopt her.

Looking at that photo of Mishu breaks our hearts — she was so skinny before we were able to adopt her that she didn’t even look like a dog, but some kind of E.T. like alien.

Which makes the work that groups like Animal Aware and other animal rescue groups and animal shelters do in helping pets find homes and people adopt them.

Adopt Don’t Shop

We can’t recommend Adopt Don’t Shop enough as the best option if you looking for a new furry friend. In addition to shelters, there are adoption rescue groups for almost every kind of dog breed you would want to adopt.

We’re so thankful every day for the work of groups like Animal Aware which brought us our sweet, spunky, fierce, smart and totally zen Dear Mishu.

By the way, if you want to combine travel with animal rescue, Animal Aware welcomes volunteers from all over the world to care for Guatemala’s street animals!

  1. I didn’t know Mishu came all the way from Guatemala! This photo is very sad, but I’m so happy Mishu was rescued by such a loving person.

I bet Mishu is having the best life now because of you! Thank goodness for organizations that help these pets find caring and loving homes.

Good for you for giving Mishu a chance at a happy life, and thank goodness for rescues like Animal Aware Guatemala that dedicate their lives to saving suffering animals. I spent the past 4 months in Spain and the situation there is horrific. If it wasn’t for all the groups that work tirelessly to save abandoned, suffering animals, many tossed into garbage cans (literally) and people like you who rescue, I hate to think how much worse off these poor souls would be.

  4. Oh, Mishu, this made us cry. We’re rescued cats who definitely support adoption. Adopt Don’t Shop is our motto! We’re so glad you have a wonderful home.

  5. Wow, that’s a traveling doggy for sure! Mishu won the dog lottery to end up with you!

  6. Even in this photo you can see her sweet soul. Thank goodness Animal Aware was able to take her in and send her to San Francisco to find her home with you. Truly a success story.

  7. You can even adopt a pedigree if you want one can’t you! I love Mishu’s story!

  9. aw…. finally love!! sadly we can’t have any other pets – condo rules…. but we are going to try and see if we can maybe adopt a senior….

  10. I didn’t realize that you traveled so far to find your forever home. I am grateful to all the people who make it possible for people to adopt pets!

  11. I had no idea Misha came from Guatemala. How wonderful she found a forever home with you.

  12. Gosh, Mishu has come a long way from her early beginning in Guatemala! So glad she was rescued and not is international celebrity!

  13. Mishu looks so different – sad and skinny. How wonderful that she made it to San Fran and you found each other. That’s interesting that you can volunteer with the rescue down in Gautemala. I’d love to visit.
